The Devil Wears Prada (3/5) Movie CLIP – Stuff (2006) HD

March 26, 2020

Where are the belts for this jacket? Why is no one ready? Here. It’s a tough call.
They’re so different. [Miranda] Mm… [sniggers] Something funny? Oh… no, no, n-nothing’s you know, it’s just that both those belts look exactly the same to me. You know, I’m still learning about this stuff and, uh… ‘This… stuff’? Oh. Okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You… go to your closet and you select, I don’t know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance … because you’re trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise, it’s not lapis, it’s actually cerulean. And you’re also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent… wasn’t it? Who showed cerulean military jackets? I think we need a jacket here. Mm. And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. And then it, uh, filtered down through the department stores … and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs … and it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry, … when, in fact, you’re wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room … from a pile of stuff.

The only funny thing here is her behaviour and ignorance towards the fact that those belts are indeed quite different.

It's hard to imagine Miranda wouldn't have fired her on the spot for that kind of insolence. Also, they go too far making Andy look so frumpy and unstylish. It reminds me of the way Carrie went off on Berger in SATC about his novel's character wearing a scrunchee because no woman in Manhattan that wasn't a tourist would be caught dead wearing a scrunchee. Someone who's been hired to work at Conde Nast is not going to come to work as if it was a small town library in Minnesota. I get they want a contrast, but it's a laughably stupid contrast.

  • Reply Tyler Schutz December 16, 2019 at 4:19 am

I honestly think Miranda was soft on Andy in the entire film. Any one of these moments she would have, and should have been fired.

I love how Andrea looks like she doesn’t know what’s happening and looks to Emily. But Emily gives her the look like “You messed up. You’re being read right now. Don’t you be looking to me for moral support”

It really wasn’t about the clothes or fashion industry, to me at least. I always viewed this scene as Anne being rude (I forget her characters name) for laughing at what they were passionate about. For anyone who is passionate about anything I’m sure similar experiences have been had where people who aren’t scoff at them for things like this.

Literally every consumer good has choices made by suppliers that consumers generally aren't involved in. If I buy a cerulean cotton polo it's not because I've been conditioned to want that, it's because I wanted a blue polo made from natural fibers and that fit the bill. If I wanted any other style, color, or material there are enough suppliers out there that I could go and get whatever I want.

It's like claiming that the paint industry controls our lives. Sure people must surround themselves with what paint is available, but there are hundreds of options and more choice available than any one person could ever fully utilize.

Now toilet paper, that's a market lacking choice! That's a market which fits Streep's monologue. Consumers can only choose ply and texture. Everything else is decided by the manufacturer.

    Does toilet paper control you?

  • Reply Random Task January 18, 2020 at 10:44 pm

And you're also blithely unaware of the fact that, in 2019 Felix Kjellberg did a series around 1.11.00, then I think it was Jacksepticye wasn't it? Who started his own series, I think we need a top-of-morning here, and then Minecraft quickly showed up on the channels of several different Youtubers. And then it uh, filtered down through the streamers, and then trickled on down into some tragic, casual website where you no doubt fished it out if some clearance tab, however that Minecraft represents millions of views and countless reddit posts and its sort of comical that you think you've made a choice thats exmpts you from the gaming industry when in fact, you're playing the game that was selected for you, by the viewers on this website, from a pile of stuff

Bullshit. What they forget in this glorification of a pernicious and poisonous industry are the societal impositions, cultural appropriation, repression the fashion industry has on Andrea’s life. Andrea should want to break the fashion, not conquer it. Miranda represents everything wrong with capitalism, hierarchy and an industry that thrives on slave labour.

  • Reply Khánh Huyền February 13, 2020 at 4:55 pm

I can tell an example from Miranda monologue about fashion's influence. These days, the 1990s style became great again as a repeated circle of fashion (every a decade): belt bags, high-waisted trousers, checked prints,… was seen on lots of collection. Chunky sneakers, for example, got the top of the hype when Balenciaga introduced the Triple S model. And then, thounsands of brands all over the world released their own chunky sneakers. This is a clear evidence to show how runways decide what people wear these days – it all started from a massively successful fashion collection.

Andy was right the belts were enough alike to not matter. These people take this far to seriously in the real industry, which they certain capture in the film. Vain people filled with their ego and delusions of importance to society. Most fashion is a just a bunch trash stuck together, you seldom see anything that is practical and beautiful. Even this outfit they put together would draw nothing but snickers if you were over 5 and wore it. Andy has the temperature right in this.
