TESTIMONY and its importance

September 2, 2019

A “Christian Testimony” or a “Personal Christian
Testimony” is described as “proof or evidence that something
exists or is true” and “a formal written or spoken statement, especially one given in
a court of law.” In this sense, testimonies can be used to
prove God exists when people may doubt his existence. This aligns with 1 Peter 3:15 which says,
” but in your hearts honour Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defence
to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness
and respect.” When people think of a Christian testimony
they often think of dramatic salvation stories. This leads many into believing they have no
testimony if perhaps they grew up in a Christian household and have no conversion story. The good news is the Bible shows that testimonies
encompass much more than just one’s journey to salvation. You can testify about anything you are grateful
for. You can testify about God’s provision, protection,
healing, deliverance, salvation and even future blessings. Testimonies offer Christians one way of defending
their faith. Furthermore, by defending their faith, they
can draw others to Jesus Christ. All but one time, Jesus told the people to
go and tell others of their healing, salvation or experience. In Acts 1:8, Jesus told the disciples,
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses
in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” A “witness” must testify to the court (people),
the judge (God) and the co-witness (Holy Spirit). What’s interesting in this verse is the order
of location. It begins with Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and
then the ends of the earth. The disciples to which Jesus said this to
are already gone. Before they died, the gospel reached Samaria,
but not the ends of the earth. In order for the gospel to reach the ends
of the earth we need people like you and me to witness to others. We also testify to fight against the devil’s
attacks. According to Revelations 12:11, Christians
overcome the devil through the blood of Jesus and through their testimonies. Think of your testimony as a shield that prevents
the enemy from attacking you. When you speak positively about your life
regardless of the circumstances, the devil will flee from you. In future content I will go further into the
topic of testimonies. We will look at how to write a personal testimony,
how to publish your testimony and also at some do’s and don’ts.
