Photoshop Tutorial: Transform a Face into a Horror Movie Poster!

August 16, 2019

Hi. This is Marty from Blue Lightning TV. I’m going to show you how to transform someone’s
face into a dark, creepy, portrait and design a horror movie poster around it. I provided this Photoshop template for you
to download, so you can follow along. Its link is located in my video’s description
or project files below. You can edit the 2 top layers if you like. I used a font called, “Trajan Pro Regular”. If you’d like to use it, I provided its link, as well. The bottom layer contains typical movie poster credits. Open a photo of a face that you’d like to
use for this project. I downloaded this one from Shutterstock. Click the Quick mask icon, which will allow
us to brush a quick mask over our image. If your foreground and background colors aren’t black and white respectively, press “D” on your keyboard. Open your Brush Tool and Brush picker. I’ll make the Brush size: 175 pixels, the
Hardness: 0% and the Opacity and Flow: 100%. If you want to adjust your brush size, first
make sure your CapsLock key is not on and press the left or right bracket key on your keyboard. Brush over the face. Press “Q” to revert it into a selection. Invert the selection by pressing Ctrl or Cmd + Shift + I. Click the Layer mask icon to make a layer mask of the selection next to the face. We’ll convert it into a Smart Object, so we
can modify the photo non-destructively and allow us to replace the face with another without having to redo the effects that we’ll be adding to it. To do this, click the icon at the upper, right
of the Layers panel and click “Convert to Smart Object”. We’ll create a new layer below it by Ctrl-clicking
or Cmd-clicking the New Layer icon. We’ll fill the empty layer with black and
since black is our foreground color, press Alt or Option + Delete. Click the top layer to make it active and
click the Adjustment layer icon. Click “Black, White”. I did an in-depth tutorial on the the Black,
White” Adjustment layer, so if you’d like to watch it, I provided its link, as well. Click the this icon to modify the monochromatic
tones of a particular area of your image. We want to darken the skin if its light, so
I’ll click on the skin and drag the tool to the left. We want to brighten the whites of the eyes,
so I’ll click on the white of the eye and drag the tool to the right. Click the Adjustment Layer icon again and
this time, click Color Balance. For Midtones, drag the Cyan/Red slider all
the way to the left and the Yellow/Blue slider all the way to the right. Click the face to make it active and go to
Filter and Filter Gallery. Open the Distort folder and click “Diffuse Glow”. I’ll make the Graininess: 10, the Glow Amount:
12 and the Clear Amount: 17, however, feel free to experiment with the amounts. You can always change it later. We’ll convert all the layers into a Smart
Object by clicking the top layer to make it active and scrolling to the bottom. Shift-click the bottom layer to make all the
layers active. Open the list and click “Convert to Smart Object”. To place it onto your poster template, press
“v” to open your Move Tool and drag it onto the tab of the poster. Without releasing your mouse or pen, drag
it down onto the poster and release. To resize and position it, open your Transform
Tool by pressing Ctrl or Cmd + T. Go to a corner and when you see a diagonal, double-arrow, press and hold Alt or Option + Shift as you drag it in or out to approximately this size. To re-position it, go inside the bounding
box and drag it. Once it’s sized and position approximately
this much, press Enter or Return. Drag the face to to the top of the Layers panel. Make at least 3 copies of it by pressing Ctrl
or Cmd + J for each copy. Hide the copies and make the bottom face active. To reveal the credits at the bottom of the
poster, open your Rectangular Marquee Tool and drag it over the poster to just below the face. Click the Layer Mask icon to make a layer
mask next to the active layer. Make the first copy visible and active. Open your Pen Tool. Choose Path. If you’re working on an version earlier than
CS6, the Path Mode is here. Click outside the face, release your mouse
or pen and click below the face. Release and click on another area above the face. Release one last time and click on the first
anchor point to close the path. Place your cursor directly on the path and
right-click your mouse or pen. Click “Make Selection”. The Feather Radius is 0 pixels and click OK. Click the Layer mask icon to make a layer
mask of the selection next to the active layer. Press “v” to open your Move Tool and drag
the shape to create an angular, sharp section over the face. Make the next layer visible and active. As before, make an angular shape with your
pen tool and make a selection of it. Click the Layer mask icon to make a layer
mask of the selection. Open your Move Tool and drag this shape a bit. Continue these steps with the remaining copies
of the face. Convert all the face layers into a Smart Object. Click the New layer icon to make a new layer. Go to Filter, Render and Fibers. I’ll make the variance: 16 and the Strength:
4, however, you can adjust the amounts if you like. Change its Blend Mode to “Color Burn”. You can re-position the fibers texture over
the face by just dragging it. To hide the fibers texture over the bottom
credits, Ctrl-click or Cmd-click the thumbnail of the face layer to make a selection of its
shape and click the Layer Mask icon to make a layer mask of the selection next to the Fibers layer. Open your Horizontal Type Tool and pick a font. I’m using Trajan Pro Regular. As I mentioned, I provided its link in my
video’s description or project files. I’ll choose a size of approximately 100 points,
Sharp and Center Alignment. Click the color box and pick a color for your
movie’s title. I’ll pick white. Then, click OK. Click on your document and type out your text. To re-size and re-position it, click your
Move Tool and open your Transform Tool. Convert your text into a Smart Object. Make a copy of it. Press “P” to open yoru Pen Tool and make an
angled path across the middle of your text. Complete the path over the top half of your
text. Then, make a selection of it. Click the Layer Mask icon to make a layer
mask of the selection next to the top layer. Go to the layer mask and press and hold Alt
or Option as you drag a copy of it next to the text under it. Invert the active layer mask by pressing Ctrl or Cmd + I. Press “v” to open your Move Tool and drag it to create an angular break in your title. If you want to another word or line to your
title, press “T” to open back your Type Tool. Click on your document and type out your text. To resize and re-position your new text, click
your Move Tool and open your Transform Tool. Convert all of your layers that comprise your
title into a Smart Object. If you want to stretch your title up or out,
use your Transform Tool. To add another line of text, open your Type
Tool again and if you want, pick another color and adjust its point size. Click on your document and type out your text. To re-position it, open your Move Tool and move it. This is Marty from Blue Lightning TV. Thanks for watching!

Just wanted to add in case anyone else runs into this problem. With CS5 you can't render fibers on a blank layer. I had to fill it (i just used white) first.

You do the best Photoshop tutorials on YT. You show every little details and have a good and calm, clear voice, which makes it easy to follow, step by step on the side with Photoshop open. I'm truly glad I came across your channel with all these amazing tutorials and I have learned alot too from them too that I didn't know it was so easy to do. Keep up with your good work! I love watching your tutorials.. they're the best ones on YT.

I did, a well appreciated, present to a couple for their first wedding anniversary from one of your tutorials called "How to Make a Vintage, Pulp Fiction Magazine Cover" and enlarged the picture into a A3-size and framed it.. The couple loved it as I made my own text for them of course and a picture with them on it dressed up a zombies.. 🙂

  • Reply RAJENDRA Pundge February 8, 2017 at 2:57 pm

I am stuck at a step. When the images are cut with the pen tool, a new layer is asked to be created and then open filter- Render-Fibres. But it says that the the command cannot be completed as the layer is blank. Pliz help to proceed further.
