Over about 15 years I went from iMovie HD to final cut 7 then X, then to premiere then to avid (briefly) and finally settled with resolve.

Da Vinci is the only way.
PC is clearly better if you gotta balance ya income and expenses on a small/medium budget.
    Macs are cool tho. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I came up using Mac and final cut pro. It all works together with little to no issue. Not saying it's better than anything else but it's what I'm used to and am comfortable with. That being said I wish I still was sharp using windows just for general purposes. But it's like the best system for you is whatever you got…until you can upgrade. Thank you for the non-bias in this video. Appreciate it.

I love your video's, and your knowledge is second to none on Youtube, however, learn more about computers….when you compare component to component, apple has "ALWAYS" been cheaper. The other PC manufactures, almost always have inferior components or integrated on the MB…..Not saying Apple is better, just saying the cost comparison is flawed.

  • Reply Benjamin Rowland November 5, 2019 at 5:53 pm

Pretty much the same mindset: I've got a custom-built PC tower in the edit suite and a MacBook Pro. (But that Razer you talked about recently has me thinking…) Building your own PC is easier than you'd expect. PC Part Picker will help you spec out a build, then go to a local parts store with your list and find someone that knows what they're talking about. My daughter built one when she was 10. She's 12 now and it is still working great.

  • Reply Jon C November 6, 2019 at 6:33 pm

"I don't really know much about computers.. all I care about is how smooth my editing process" which is exactly why companies make so much money selling underpowered systems to chumps. Pro tip for wanna be pros… understanding what makes your editing process smooth and why is a really good way to improve that process and save a ton of money in the process.

To address a few of your comments, you can use Messages on any PC or Mac by going to and scanning a QR code to sync it. Syncing is extremely fast and only needs to be done once, so texting from a PC works just like imessage except its a website not a separate app. Also I use Seer on Windows 10 to give me an extremely useful space bar preview just like MacOS has, and it's free and requires no effort whatsoever after the ~30 second installation process.

Value for value. Buy a 2009 Mac Pro, do a efi flash and make it a 2010 5,1 Mac Pro. You can go 6 or 12 core and do almost anything you need. Upgrade the gpu to a 480 or 580 rx and you can do anything a new Mac pro or MacBook pro can do. However, that being said. This will be my last Mac. While I do like the MacBook air and recommend that to any and everyone outside of people rending videos, but the entire OS in my opinion is turning more into an Iphone/ipadOS and less of a MacOS. I don't want to be tired to the apple ecosystem. If I use an iPhone and iPad I imagine I'd love it. But to me, 10.14 and 10.15 are turning all the macs into giant ipads. Which I'm not interested in. So when this 10 year old Mac Pro (still running strong) goes, I'll be going towards pc. But… I don't think there's any 2009 PC that can run as well as this one. There isn't a PC that's 10 years old that still competes with current systems the way this 5,1 Mac Pro can.

With the new ryzen hackintoshes being easier to install than intel now, and with less driver crashes with every new update, I would say, build a custom all AMD build and run macOS. Also there are boards will thunderbolt 3 and 10gig lan ports on them from ASROCK. You literally only lose imessege and facetime. With Final Cut being more GPU bound than iGPU bound, buying a radeon VII or used Vega 64 puts them at such a good point, buying a real mac is a total waste.

There is no actual PC vs Mac debate, except when it comes to preference. When it comes to facts, performance, and raw power per dollar,PC kicks Macs down the damn steps, clear into the basement.I do have an use Mac,but I stuck with less expensive and more upgrade able Macs, like my G4s.Most of us are not making feature films and way,and those who are do not just use one desktop, since we not only need to power,we need redundancy one computer cannot give.Long gone are the lies about virus issues, hardware compatibility, and OS nightmares.Even on this laptop i am using,i get more or the same processing power, for half the price of a Macbook.Plus,as I said, the editing chain does not start and end on one computer,so paying $52K for a desktop is spending too much. For that price,I found a Titan desktop, with 28+ cores,1TB RAM,4 drives, and two monitors for less than half. Then with that money,I can then get a server or two,or a NAS,and then afford another desktop fully loaded with drives ,as my backup. That's just an example, yet in the REAL film world,it's a PC/Mac,servers,RAID drive configurations, and enterprise systems running Linux/Unix.No enterprise is trying to run it's business on consumer level OS and home computers.
