Today I’m going to show you how to light up the sky and use this effect to create a cinematic experience. Warning. The following editing techniques can be used within any editing software. Only because of personal preferences I’m using VEGAS Pro as my editing software of choice in this tutorial. What’s up guys, Bobby here from theletterisb. The footage I’ve used for this tutorial is from the video “FACES OF NYC” by Aidin Robbins. The link to his awesome piece of art is in the video description. Shoutout to him. Now, to create the effect we will have to make sure we have one video track where we place our original footage, and one empty track above it, so we can copy our footage and place it on top of the original one Let’s get into the pan & crop of the video footage copy and create a mask around the sky. As you can see my mask is already finished. All I need to do from this point is to move frame by frame and adjust the mask to the movement of the scene. This way our mask will be tracked and move simultaneously with the camera movement within the footage. How many frames do we have to adjust the mask you might ask? Usually I go for around 20 frames so I have plenty of time to let the light fade naturally. Quick tip! I usually turn off the mask within the preview so I have a easier time adjusting the masking anchors. After that I add some sort of highlight effect, here in VEGAS Pro we can use the effect called “Levels”, drop it onto our footage, set the brightness, click on “animate” by hitting the little clock icon right here and set a keyframe where the effect should end. After that we drop down the brightness to 0. And the effect is done. What we could add, is a thunder sound to give the effect that cinematic feel at the end.
