How the Pyramids Were Built (Pyramid Science Part 2!)

January 23, 2020

This episode is supported by Skillshare. Hey smart people, so a few weeks ago we made
a video about the pyramids, and how, while they are pretty heckin’ impressive, we can
trace the evolution of their construction and see the ancient Egyptians using trial
and error, and even making a few mistakes, which basically tells us they didn’t need
aliens to build them, they just needed science. You guys really liked that video, but a few
of you were… a little bothered that, despite the fact it was called “WHO built the pyramids?”
that I didn’t talk about HOW the pyramids were made. Soooo, let’s talk about it! [OPEN] The hundred-plus pyramids scattered around
Egypt were all built a bit differently, but we’re gonna focus on THE BIG ONE. Let’s review the stats! The Great Pyramid originally rose more than
146 meters tall and contained about 2.3 million stone blocks. But the start of any construction project
truly begins with the foundation, which is impressive in its own right. Its base is level to less than 2 cm, it’s
square to within 11 (cm), and its edges are aligned to the compass within 3/60ths of a
degree. This precision is pretty incredible since
compasses didn’t actually exist yet, and since forty-five hundred years ago the North
Star was in a completely different place. But finding North is actually pretty easy,
just watch where any star rises and sets during the night, and cut the angle in half. After that, squaring the sides just requires
measuring a right angle. Pythagoras and his equation came way later,
but ancient cultures like the Egyptians knew a 3-4-5 triangle made a 90˚ corner. They could even make a right angle with two
circles: the line connecting the intersection of the arcs is perpendicular to a line through
their centers. To level the base, some theories say the Egyptians
used water filled channels as natural levels, but this isn’t likely when you consider
how much water they’d have to carry in to keep it from evaporating. But if you can make a right angle, you can
make a level. Put that on some legs, and you can level over
long distances. When you think about it, a pyramid is just
a bunch of stacked squares, so if you can master this measurement, you’re most of
the way there. Now we just need some stones. The Great Pyramid’s core is made of more
than 2 million blocks of rough yellow limestone. This was quarried right next to the pyramids,
which is a big reason why they chose sites like Giza, where prehistoric oceans had deposited
this building material right under their feet. They would dig channels and pry these blocks
right from the Earth, and the size of the blocks was actually determined by the natural
thickness of these limestone layers. You can see evidence of these layers in The
Sphinx, which was actually dug out of the Earth, not built on top of it. The pyramids were originally covered in smooth
white limestone from quarries up the Nile, which was stolen to use in other buildings
thousands of years ago. We’ve found many chisels, drills, and saws
used at these quarries, and the only metal Egyptians had access to was copper. That’s a pretty soft metal, but when a slurry
of sand and powdered rock is poured in as an abrasive, even copper tools can cut limestone. To build the Great Pyramid in 23 years, an
Olympic swimming pool’s worth of stone had to be quarried every eight days. That’s a lot, but modern pyramid building
experiments using technology available to Ancient Egyptians calculated this amount of
stone could be cut and moved by a quarry team of 1200 to 1500 workers, which is totally
doable. Heavier stones, like the granite used in the
pyramid’s inner chambers, are much harder than limestone. They were literally chipped out by hand using
heavy dolerite hammer stones, which we’ve also found… a LOT of. It would have taken a full day’s pounding
to chip away a few centimeters, but then again they didn’t have Twitter to distract them. We’ve found Egyptian boats large enough
to have floated these stones down the Nile, but how were 2 million blocks actually moved
into place? It might be hard to believe, but wheels for
transportation are a surprisingly recent invention. Not because rolling a round thing is hard
to figure out but because inventing a workable axle is. The oldest known rolling wheels on Earth date
to before the Great Pyramid, but not in Egypt. Paintings tell us Egyptians used wooden sleds
to move large objects, but they still had to deal with friction. Burying wood rails horizontally will allow
a sled to slide more freely, but researchers at the University of Amsterdam showed in 2014
that sand has an interesting property, wetting it with the right amount of water makes it
remarkably slick. A team of ten workers can easily pull a one-ton
sled, but people always seem to forget that Egyptians had animals like donkeys and cattle
around to help too. Constructing ramps to deliver stone must have
been nearly as monumental as the pyramid itself. This is one place where there’s no records
of what they looked like, but researchers have examined lots of possibilities. An engineer named Craig Smith has done probably
the most detailed ramp analysis, calculating how many stones could be delivered with each
design, and he believes the Egyptians extended a big, wide ramp near the bottom where a pyramid
requires most of its stones, and spiral ramps near the top where fewer blocks are needed. Wooden levers, and round dolerite “ball
bearings” were used to guide stones into place, where they were carved to an exact
fit. Joints between some of the few remaining smooth
outer stones are so precise you can’t even slip a credit card between them, but digs
have shown they weren’t as careful with interior stones. It’s a popular idea that the pyramids were
built by slaves, but you shouldn’t believe everything you see in the movies. Egyptologists like Mark Lehner have uncovered
enormous cities built to feed, house, and equip thousands of skilled workers, with breweries,
bakeries, tool shops… signs that whole families lived nearby. Egyptian society at all levels dedicated themselves
to what they viewed as the kingdom’s proudest work. It’s actually pretty incredible that we
have as much evidence as we DO about how the pyramids were built, but that doesn’t mean
building them was easy. In fact it’s the opposite. But difficult doesn’t mean impossible. Stay curious.

sweet, and now can you explain how this same culture – The ones that built the most perfectly aligned structure, encoded in the numbers of it's measurement the dimensions of the earth, distance of earth moon and sun and their dimentions, golden ratio's and the fact they have now been proved that they can focus electromagnetic energy – crafted all the perfect laser precision finishes of 90 degree angles both on simple multi ton blocks but also crafting: flower coloumns, locking lids, water tight seems, complex interlocking curved block edges and other complex and geometrically symmetrical stone blocks. Or maybe how they were able to move 900 ton blocks thousands kms with this wet sand you speak of yet not have invented the wheel?

Point one- He doesn't mention the 500 ton rocks that are used underneath their base.
    Point two- 2.5 million rocks
Point three- Wood does not have the strength to pry 25-50 ton rocks out of their location.
Point four- Copper can cut sandstone at 1mm every 48 hours. They did a physical experiment in the 90's.
Point five- Dolarite cannot cut granite. They also only used composites
Point six- They did the ramps theory in the 90's. It did not work at all. Calculation or not. It's nothing without the hard physical experiment.
Point seven- Mark Lehnar does not even acknowledge the vertical fissures around the Sphnix. That was created through heavy rainfall. No heavy rainfall for at least 12k years.

Seems its ok to be smart. But not to smart to see this is just a bunch of theories that have been disproven time and time again but Egyptologist refuse to acknowledge the work of hundreds of engineers, scientist, and others.

is it really okay to be smart? who gets to decide what constitutes evidence? you, Mark Lehner, and Zahi Hawass?

what is it with you "science" guys and the pyramids? why does it have
to be a binary choice between "aliens" and "we know 99% how they did it,
except for some minor details?" what if it was [a] humans, [b] a
civilization much older than dynastic egyptians, and [c] with technology
we haven't rediscovered yet, despite our amazing phones and airplanes?
i tend to think [b] & [c] because of the numerous megalithic
structures around the world built with precision stonework by unknown
peoples, upon which are added later iterations of comparatively sloppy
stonework by the empires we attribute the entire structure to. while
there are plausible hypotheses for pulley ramps from the nile, and
internal spiral ramps in the pyramids, these theories in no way explain
the numerous technical challenges accomplished by the ancient
architects. not to mention the weird discolorations and damage that
look like stone superheated and melted in some cases. if you want to
get into the nitty gritty, check out the videos of Brien Foerster,
UnchartedX, Bright Insight, etc. you won't find any Ancient Aliens
stuff there, just detailed engineering puzzles, but no pat explanations
    or outlandish theories.

You're missing the best explanation of how the pyramids were built. Naming a external straight ramp for the first 45 meters then a interior ramp spiral for the rest. The telemetric data shows the density to decreased in a spiral shape, there's visible 7 degree lines on the outside as well as the external knocks for turning the blocks. This theory is backed up by other internal systems during the time, and evidence that outer limestone was put in place FIRST thus making a external ramp impossible, plus the straight ramp would be canabalized once the base as all other theories mean you'd have to destroy the ramp post completion but there is NO sign of that demolition. Even the chamber has evidence of a counterweight system to move the granite into place.

Although I can and do appreciate the info and content of this video, it, like countless others fails to cover the issue of HOW the stones were removed from the earth, especially the granite blocks, couple this with the time scale (20 yrs) and the average time each block needed to be quarried, dressed to size, transported and placed into position (approx every 2½ munutes based on a 12hr day) this reason amongst many others I wish I could add to this post proves that the ancient Egyptians simply and with all due respect to them could not have built the pyramids, we can't build a pyramid today even with all our modern technologies. Maybe one day we will be lucky enough to discover the real geniuses behind this lost civilisation and the wonders they created

Just a hypothesis, but… I think Mars was inhabited before Earth. I'm talking like tens if not hundreds of thousands of years ago. At the risk of sounding like the Superman movie, Mars was having environmental issues/losing their atmosphere, they built a ship, or altered an old moon of Mars, with Earth in mind to help it's development. And sent this spacecraft, the MOON, to Earth filled with needed supplies and wildlife. Possible Ark comparison, maybe? Once they got to Earth, they set it to the proper orbit/specifications it's at currently, then came to Earth to live. They built the great pyramid and various other structures all around the world that we couldn't have built, even by today's abilities. The great pyramid is the only one built like it functioned as some kind of device. The others were built more recently trying to duplicate the original. They didn't have the factories or necessities to maintain the spacecraft for a long period of time so they wasted away. Or catastrophe struck and survivors didn't know how to continue maintenance of spacecraft. I also think life on Earth has been wiped out a couple times(asteroids, pole shifts, even nuclear war possibly) since then, with very little information passing through to the next generation of humans as we call ourselves. We just keep picking up the pieces and moving along. Again, just a thought… It would be nice if we didn't have to rely on gov't to explore these types of issues… no way to confirm or deny, but interesting, I think.

I feel like everyone using the word "Theory," as if it's some deragatory term in science, when in fact, it's one of the highest valued terms. People have to understand, in science, when you're trying to find the answers to a hypothesis, the answers can always alter and change. For instance, the heliocentric theory, and Gravity. Therefore, the word theory is used when a supportable hypothesis has been proven by many with experimentation. When you read "theories" on how the pyramids were made, if it's by a plausible source, then that means that it was created with the help of math, and just straight up trial and error.

Limestone is easy to carve and shape when wet. Also they would use floats. Papyrus would be able to hold the weight of a stones when used as float bundles.

Most of the pyramid was not made of cut stone but rather built by means of molded stones based on "geopolymer" technology. See: for a demo.
The researcher Joseph Davidovits found out about the molded nature of these so called "cut stones" when he discovered bubbles and strings in these! It is a shame that some egyptologists are still denying this possibility.

What's more important, HOW or WHY they were built….A man argues for the latter

This was way off. It was built due to vibrational frequencies

First of all, dont believe a word that zahi hawass says, he is a liar, a thief, and lucky not to be in jail. No-one knows how old the great pyramid is or who built it. "They" say it took 20 years to build…lets look at the numbers. Approx 2.3M stones on the great pyramid. To lay them down perfectly aligned with each other and to the compass points in 20 years, a stone would have to be placed down perfectly every 5 MINUTES. Thats day and night, without stopping. At all. For 20 years. Do the math. Not to mention the average weight of the stones was about 5 ton. Some as large as 80 ton. I have no idea how it was built, when it was built or by whom. Nor does anyone else if they are honest. There are only educated guesses. There are no Egyptian hieroglyphs inside and no hieroglyphics elsewhere mentioning it. Remarkable don't you think? There are no soot marks inside, indicating the builders used a form of lighting inside the pyramid that gave off no fumes/soot etc, unlike any known lighting used by the Egyptians. Also, there is no evidence the pyramid was built as a tomb for anyone. The great pyramid cannot be built today with our current technology, not in less than 20 years anyway. Regardless of what the "experts" say, it is still a great mystery. And don't even get me started on the sphinx…
