Best FREE Photoshop Alternative You’ve NEVER Heard Of???

August 13, 2019

– Hey everybody this is Roberto Blake helping you create
something awesome today. I use Adobe Photoshop pretty frequently. I use it for all of my graphic design work for the most part. I use pretty much everything
in the Adobe ecosystem. It’s done the graphics
of this YouTube channel, the graphics for
awesomecreatoracademy.com, and the graphics for my podcast. And while I’m still a huge
advocate for Adobe products because of my experience with them, the fact that I’ve used them literally for about roughly two decades now. Well, I still feel like
there should be some budget solutions for people who need them and for people who don’t make a living yet from their digital art and their projects. So in looking for free
and affordable solutions, I came across something that
I didn’t necessarily expect. I found a free alternative to Photoshop that wasn’t Gimp. What I ended up finding
was a browser based application called Photopea.com spelled like peas in a pod. And Photopea is something that I really wasn’t expecting. A browser based version
of Photoshop essentially that could open and save PSD files and the only caveat is that it does have ads on the sidebar and if you can put up with that then you’re good to go and
it won’t cost anything. The features are almost exactly like Photoshop and it’s
pretty easy to use. One of the things that
turned me on to this was I was looking for more solutions for my students in
awesomecreatoracademy.com and our mentoring program. I was looking for people who have bought the YouTube starter kit to have a you know, piece of software that wouldn’t cost them anything extra just to go ahead and use some of the resources that I’m providing because when I built
the YouTube starter kit, for those of you that are not familiar I build this graphic design package with over 150 downloads right now and I update it sometimes with new things. Its like templates for
YouTube channel artwork, templates for YouTube thumbnails, end cards, all kinds of
graphics and I was like well, you bought this and its 99 bucks. Do you also need to go
out and buy software just to use it? And you know that was a little
uncomfortable for some people so I was like well here’s a list of budget software. And I came up with things like
Affinity Photo and Designer, and obviously Gimp is free, and Pixlr and things like that. But then, there was Photopea. And I was like wow, well anybody could use this
because it’s browser based. Even if you’re not on Mac or PC, if you’re on bloody
Lennox you could use this. So it made perfect sense. So I wanted to just let you guys know that this is free software
that you can take advantage of. It’s actually really good. Photopea isn’t paying me anything. They’re not sponsor;
there’s no backend deal. And they’re an opensource platform so I don’t know if they
really could afford me if they wanted to
influence their marketing and so just as long as this is around, I would take advantage of it if I was you. If more people are using it or if more people decide to upgrade to the premium offering that they have then this will stick
around and we can have good, open source solutions. And I think this is a
nice different approach. Photoshop will always be my bae. It will always be my
main program that I go to for anything that I need
when it comes to graphics. It’s the thing that I know the most and I love what they’re
doing with machine learning to scale it and to make things just work even
better and more accurately. So I’m a big fan of what
the Adobe team is doing. I always will be but
that doesn’t mean I want you know, only focus
on expensive solutions. I remember what it’s like
not to have a lot of money and to need open sore
software or budget solutions so I will talk about
them here on the channel from time to time even though they’re not really the
tools that I use the most. So I won’t be going super deep on them just because I’m not happy with the open
sore solutions sometimes just from my perspective because the things that they’re lacking are exactly why when I could afford it, I did upgrades and I
bought into the new stuff and when you do that, it feels almost impossible to go backwards and you’ll experience that for yourself or maybe you’ve experienced
that in the past. So, question of the day. What software and solutions do you want me to make tutorials around? Some of you have asked for
more video editing tutorials. Those are going to come
and I’m going to try and make them as simple
as possible for people. A lot of you have asked me to do some more tutorials and training around camera gear so that’s coming because I’ve
got some new camera stuff. And of course I’ve got a new drone coming
in so stay tuned for that. But I want to know, well what do you guys want tutorials on? What do you want training on? And I’ll try to work it here
into my content calendar and just see what I can do for you guys. Definitely make sure you’re
checking out photopea.com. Like I said, it’s completely
free open sore software. I’m not getting any money from this but if you want to check out some of my other resources and
some of the tools I use, you can check out those links
in the description down below. Also, make sure you’re checking out awesomecreatoracademy.com. That is my online education platform. I’ve got a blog over there where I’m putting out
some interesting content. You can also check out all the resources that I use in my business and you can see if there’s anything we’re offering at Awesome Creator
Academy that might be able to help you guys out with
whatever you’re doing as a creative pro or if you’re an entrepreneur
trying to market your business. Like this video if you like it. Don’t forget to subscribe. Check out the other awesome
stuff here on the channel. As always you guys, thanks so very much for watching and don’t forget, go out there and create
something awesome today. Take care. (calm music)

Thanks for the video! I'll definitely be looking to photopea if I'm trying to do graphics. Just a quick note, photopea is not open source. They have a Github page, but it only serves to report issues, doesn't actually have the engine's code on it.

Hi Roberto! Thanks for this awesome video!!

I've got a question, or I need your advice. So I got this mail from "mearchby.me" And I do not understand it perfectly, but they reach out to youtube channels and they wanna help me selling some merch. Which I don't understand cuz I've a small channel. They give you a 14 days free trial, whatever that means when it's about merch. Anyway, do you think this is legit? I've been mailing with them for some time now, and to me they sound legit, but I'm still scared. I think it would be cool to try this, they got this 14 days free trial, but still. Do you got some advice? Thanks in advance! Love you man!

Hey Roberto! Thanks for the insights and videos! I've been binge watching all this great information you've shared trying to get a handle on the youtube and getting viewers and such. While I've been mainly staying to your YouTube specific content for new creators I had to check this one out. I recently abandoned Adobe as I found their software to be getting awful bloated. Some other alternatives people can use that are free/affordable that I switched to are these:

    Photoshop Alternative: Affinity Photo – https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/photo/ ($49)
    Illustrator Alternative: Affinity Designer – https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/designer/ ($49)
    After Effects Alternative: https://hitfilm.com/express (FREE)

Switching from Photoshop/Illustrator to the Affinity softwares had minimal learning curve, I found them to be extremely similar in function/options and use. Hitfilm is a tad different (interface wise) from after effects so it does take some getting used to. But it has a ton of tutorials and once you know where stuff is, it really isn't that different.

Anyway. Hope these links help some folks out! Thanks again for the great information! Keep creating awesome!

WOW, this is super cool. I've been asked by students for awhile now about alternatives to Adobe Products and no matter how much I try and convince them that the $9.99 a month is worth it, there are those who still don't see the value. I get it. So as a result I have mentioned things like Luminar and others but this PhotoPea is fantastic. I think I may do some tutorials on it for my community. Thanks a bunch for sharing. Super cool.

  • Reply Scott Markowitz March 15, 2018 at 2:58 pm

Cool. I'll check it out. Let's see how PhotoPea shapes up.

I strongly believe that, unless you're a pro designer, Photoshop (and the Adobe suite- in general) is way too much. It's so complicated that it takes serious energy to keep up with all you can do with it. Then, you have to keep up with all the updates. Again, if you make your livelihood as a designer, it's well worth it. For the rest of us (I'm an editor)

I prefer using Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer on MAC. They boot up much faster, the interface is far more responsive, and I can do 99% of the things I need to do in design and image processing software.

  • Reply Scott Cramer March 16, 2018 at 7:41 pm

Does anyone know if you can add a stroke to images on PhotoPea?
    *edit*
I found it! You just have to go to Layer > Layer Style > Stroke
    This site is awesome.

  • Reply Sarah Andrea Royce March 21, 2018 at 5:50 pm

Great tip I personally use Gimp, and Photoshop and me have a bit of a bad history, because it was so much directed for print in the early days of web development and I prefered Paint Shop Pro at the time that seemed a lot better with bitmaps for use with a display.

  • Reply Thirstytraveler41 March 26, 2018 at 2:54 pm

It is a great alternative to Photoshop. I found out about it thanks to one of your podfest 2018. One tip is if you are a student, Photoshop is cheaper. I would be interested in video editing tutorials. Thanks

Nice "little" discovery. It perfectly opened and old PSD of mine with masks, smart filters, layer groups etc. A handy solution. Also, a very good offline alternative, esp. if you are into painting (but photo editing too even if it is hardly publicised as such) is Krita. Awesome piece of software, it works on OS X; Windows and Linux and it also opens .psd files and somehow better non-destructive tols compared to Gimp.

I've recently tried out this tool and it turned out to be a surprisingly interesting tool to edit photos. I find it easy to use and quite useful for certain retouching needs.

I also use and recommend BatchPhoto. It's a tool for Windows and Mac designed to edit multiple photos at once. Really useful if you have to resize, watermark or date stamp images in bulk.
