Behind the Scenes with Terminator: Dark Fate | Adobe Creative Cloud

October 11, 2019

and this movie the central premise that we operate from is that Judgment Day is inevitable Terminator dark fate is the direct sequel to Terminator 2 the opportunity this movie is to finish the story of these characters not only Jim Cameron is coming back to produce Arnold’s coming back again and more importantly Linda to play this iconic character Sarah Connor is the best of all possible worlds okay we’re testing and what we want to do here and then getting closer to final Terminator dark fate is as big as you can get this is probably the biggest movie that’s been edited on Adobe Premiere I’ve had a relationship with Adobe for almost my entire career as a visual effects artist I used Adobe to edit my own work 20 years ago I was really excited when I heard this film was going to be done on premiere because it allowed me to utilize some of the new tools that Adobe’s really been pushing in terms of the collaborative workflow for a major feature film we had four assistants editors we had three visual effects editors all these people are needing to access the project file and write into it at the same time as me and we were able to do that we’ve got 2600 VFX shots probably ten to 15 people in timelines sharing at real time it’s the sort of deal-breaker for these types of Hollywood movies that’s the kind of I think it’s a total game changer for Adobe I’ll be back as Julian’s cutting I’ll go ahead and start pulling scenes from him if it’s blue-screen comps I can dynamic link and after-effects and with the background plates easily go ahead and replace that blue screen so he doesn’t have to sit there and watch a car scene with blue screen he’s got those comps already done you can have people working in After Effects that are feeding back into the Edit in a way that’s very organic and doesn’t waste a lot of time I’m working hand in hand with the editor he or she will come to me and say I need this thing on the screen here it doesn’t exist make it happen you were developing a concept that will ultimately be done it at a higher level by visual effects houses but you need sort of a temp version – proof of concept I’ll be in Premiere I’ll be able to dynamically link that shot into After Effects and use all the Adobe ecosystem really easily to be able to create something as a placeholder or sometimes take it all the way to final and that provides the editor what they’re after to be able to show the director their vision what I was able to do is I bought a $2.00 digital t800 model and then I used a product called mixin mo which is a motion capture library where I was able to upload that t800 rig it and mix ammo and then I had access to thousands of different motion capture library movements render it out and then bring it to After Effects and then create a comp where I actually had 1,800 in the scene when there would be nothing and he was moving around and doing all these things and I just blew Julian away who’s the future but you didn’t change our fate okay we just made a major Hollywood film on premiere and absolutely it could be done premiere can withstand big long for movies we have a lot of assets in this movie we’re 20 visual effects layers deep we’ve got 30 audio tracks with huge VFX scenes we do a lot of speed effects ramps color effects third-party camera shake plugins split screens and kind of throw all this stuff at the timeline and premiere makes it work [Music]

This editing is bullshit this will never be as good or even close to T2. They need to invest in live real action again and stop this cgi shit!

i have tried talking to just about evryone and alls they keep saying is the contest is over.  I have followed the guidlines set by the contest to the letter.  When i ent to submit my entry(BEFORE) the contest had ended,it put me on an infinite loading screen and would not let me submit and now, after working for over a week on my trailer emix i am not able to submit my entry which has agitated me quite a bit what can  be done and who can i contact because the sponsor has the rights to take my entry and it seems unfair not to if they host the contest then when their website didnt work my entry gets discarded.

It is a mixture of cgi and practical effects. It brings more epicness to the action scenes. It's gonna look spectacular!!

Adobe: A Short-sighted company with a broken moral compass.

Thank you Adobe for demonstrating that you are the most Short-sighted tech company in the world. I have been an Adobe User for most of my career. You develop wonderful products but this time you just really did wrong. Venezuelan people are struggling to survive in a fake dictatorship where one of the most sensitive matters is human rights and actually freedom of speech. It is known that adobe tools enable professionals all over the world to generate content that allows people to express but more important to denounce injustice. By doing this “Venezuela designers turn to piracy after Adobe announces it will cut service"…/venezuela-designers-turn-to-pirac…

Designers, content creators in Venezuela rely on your tools not only to create funny memes in facebook but actually to show the world how much damage the Venezuelan government has done to the Venezuelan people. And quoting one of my most admired characters in British politics, the Venezuelan government could not give more a flying flamingo about you Adobe (thank you John Bercow 😛 ).

I know supporting piracy is a difficult statement here, but at the same time, there are a lot of young designers that are trying to survive by providing cheap labor online. So friend’s history will not condemn you for violating fat pig laws that forgot how to be human.

In conclusion for a Web developer like me, this may be career suicide but I expected better from a company I have dedicated more than 20 years of my life. I know probably no one will read this but if someone important at Adobe actually does, I please ask you to reconsider your position because the people you are damaging are just labor class and warriors struggling to survive (thanks Tool) in a very fake democracy fill with injustice.

How much CGI did T2 have? The T-1000 of course but outside of that, how much? Cameron used rear projection which gave it a real feel. I know it’s 2019 but maybe focusing on more realistic situations, relying less on computer graphics might be a better move. Less is more imo.

So maybe someone should clarify that what's shown here are very basic previz work and that noone in the industry would ever try to composite plates from Alexas, Reds and Gopros, etc, mixed with decades old studio stock assets and outputs from 3 different renderers in an app like After Effects that has no proper camera tracking, lacking any premultiplication control and have awful color handling?

    Just sayin' 😜

It's great to see Adobe is getting back on track with development on Premiere.
    Wish lists for professionals:
    – Automatic Cut detection (when client's don't send edl's with their offline cuts)
    – More support and tools for frame based workflows
    – A python API
    – Batch export options with naming and filesytem structures in mind (see Hiero/NukeStudio)
    – Proper Color Management / Colorspace support (ACES etc)
    – STOP PUSHING AUTOMATIC UPDATES… we work on projects that can span a year or two.. We don't tend to update software for such project to make sure our pipelines don't break mid production..
